Craft brew establishments along the W&OD trail
Riders cycling on the Washington and Old Dominion trail in Northern Virginia can build up quite a thirst. I know I do, and for that reason I've undertaken research to compile a list of places near the trail where a cyclist might stop for some craft brew refreshment. Bikeablebrews.com is the result of my research efforts to date. I've tried to identify every establishment serving craft beer that is located near the W&OD. The list encompasses the entire 44.8-mile length of the trail, from Shirlington in south Arlington to Purcellville in Loudoun County. I will gladly add any place I may have missed. The only criteria for inclusion: must be no more than 1.5 miles from the W&OD and serve beer on premises, with the focus on craft brews.

ReplyDeleteSome factoids from bikeablebrews.com -
ReplyDeleteBeer for breakfast anyone? The beer/wine bar at Whole Foods Tysons starts serving at 8 am.
Explore some breweries and brewpubs along the trail: Eleven places near the W&OD brew their beer in-house.
Don't want to leave trailside? Five craft beer bars are adjacent to the trail. Seventeen are a half mile or less from the trail.
Let's meet at 8 am for a few brews
DeleteGreat public service! Something I had planned to do but never got around to!
ReplyDeleteWell researched!
ReplyDeleteWell done! Making plans now!
ReplyDeleteVienna Inn across from Whole Foods is a venerable cross between a dive bar and a family restaurant with cheap eats that does serve more craft beers than it used to. I think Old Dominion used to make its Vienna Inn Ale. They still have VI Ale, don't now who makes it. But they usually do have a few other legit craft beers on tap
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info. It's been many years since my last beer at Vienna Inn. I think it was a PBR. I'm also getting tips on some other places that have upgraded their brews on tap.
DeleteNow your ride to the taps is all mapped out for you at http://dmofot.github.io/bikeablebrews/. Check out this geospatial presentation of Bikeablebrews.
ReplyDeleteOne more brewpub just added to the website: Belly Love Brewing in Purcellville. Now there are 11 breweries / brewpubs open for business along the W&OD, with another – Caboose in Vienna – set to open this spring. Also keep an eye out for Victory Brewing to open a brewpub in Leesburg in mid-2016.
